New Age of Responsibility?

I’m sure everyone on this part of the planet foolhardy enough to stay awake late at night on the eve of a workday won’t miss it for the world. Yes, I’m talking about the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

His oratory skills are indisputable, and on his big day he did not disappoint. I would have to look a long way back in history to find a match, perhaps Kennedy or Churchill. As usual, he continued his rhetoric of hope and idealism. Some say he sets his bar too high, but I believe it is important for those in high office to have even higher ideals, lest our standards get dragged further and further down (water boarding anyone?).

However, the time for talk is over, and now as the most powerful man on the planet, he would have to turn dreams into reality in midst of a global nightmare. Let’s see if this new president and do more than just giving inspiring hot air. I sure hope he can, because the hopes of so many ride with him.

As he ends he speech, calling for an era of responsibility and national sacrifice, the crowd disperses to watch the parades. Behind them, is a mountain of garbage. Obama sure has a lot on his hands, and I’m not sure if his citizens are ready for it.

To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

I can’t help but think of UMNO when Barack mentioned this. FYI, China’s CCTV censored this part of the speech :(
